WHY NOW

Useful bikes are getting smaller, stronger and stranger.

New compact longtails and adaptable platforms make the category easier to store—but launch material is not an independent road test.

01 / TERN

A new compact HSD arrives.

Tern announced an updated HSD in July 2026, pitching a regular-bike footprint with a 190kg maximum gross vehicle weight. Capacity and compatibility remain model-specific.

02 / URBAN ARROW

Longtail joins the family-bike range.

The Breeze extends Urban Arrow beyond its familiar front-box format. Check the official passenger, accessory and rider limits for the configuration you actually buy.

See the official Breeze page
03 / LEMMO

Cargo bike becomes an adaptable platform.

LEMMO’s 2026 APV page presents a full-suspension cargo platform. Reservation, crowdfunding and “coming soon” language are not proof of retail delivery.

PICK THE SHAPE

Three ways to carry the day.

01

Compact longtail

Near-normal length, extended rear rack. Easier to park and often suited to one passenger or panniers.

storage first
02

Full longtail

Longer rear deck for bigger loads or more passenger options. Measure gates, sheds and lifts before buying.

capacity first
03

Front loader

Cargo sits ahead of the rider for visibility and volume. Longer wheelbase and steering feel demand a real test ride.

volume first

BEFORE YOU BUY

Five checks before anyone climbs aboard.

Official limits, a loaded test ride and a safe charging plan matter more than a long accessory list.

01

Confirm the legal category

For ordinary UK cycle rules, check for working pedals, a motor no stronger than 250W continuous rated output and assistance that cuts out above 15.5mph. A non-compliant machine may be treated as a motor vehicle.

02

Test it fully loaded

Ride the exact format with representative weight. Check low-speed balance, turning space, hill starts and braking before carrying a child or valuable load.

03

Read every weight limit

Gross vehicle, rear rack, front carrier, seat and accessory limits are different. The lowest relevant limit wins.

04

Plan safe charging

Use the correct charger, keep escape routes clear and never charge while asleep or away. Stop using a battery that is hot, swollen, damaged or behaving unusually.

05

Price the complete setup

Include passenger seats, rails, foot protection, weather cover, locks, servicing, secure storage and battery replacement—not only the bike.
